The 60-second version

Trump rejected Iran's seven-day plan to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran offered to reopen the strait within a week in exchange for release of about $12 billion in frozen assets, lifted oil sanctions and an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports; Trump said the deal "would not be acceptable" (Al Jazeera). The Wall Street Journal, via CNBC, reports that Trump has told aides renewed bombing after the November midterms is likely. On Sunday Iran said it won't soften its conditions, and Iranian media reported explosions near Qeshm Island in the strait after the rejection (Al Jazeera). This matters most because oil is the main input to the inflation and bond-yield story below.

The US and China cut tariffs on $30 billion of goods and extended their trade truce to January 10 as Xi Jinping's Washington visit wrapped. The two sides also agreed to an eight-point consensus, a new trade council and a US–China AI dialogue (CNBC). It is modest in dollar terms, and CNBC's takeaways call it more spectacle than substance. Still, it takes a tariff re-escalation off the table for the rest of the year.

The 10-year Treasury yield is near a 19-year high, around 5.17%, after breaking above 5.1% on Wednesday for the first time since 2007 (CNN). Year-ahead inflation expectations jumped to 4.6%, and futures put a ~64% chance on another Fed hike in October (CNBC).

Stocks still finished the week higher. On Friday the S&P 500 rose 0.5% to 7,743 and the Dow gained 479 points, as Brent fell 2.1% to about $104 on brief hopes that Hormuz would reopen (CNBC). Saturday's rejection of the Iran deal undercuts that exact hope, and Sunday-night trading reflected it: S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures fell 0.2%, while Brent rose more than 1% to about $105.86 after opening near $107 (CNBC).

Nepal is being hit again. An avalanche struck Himlung Himal base camp, leaving as many as 14 local workers missing. The country is still recovering from August's glacier-collapse flood, which killed more than 1,000 people (CNN). More below.

Markets: the stock rally is running on hope about oil, and that hope took a hit on Saturday

There was no session today, and these are Friday's closes, not new moves: S&P 500 7,743 (+0.5%), Nasdaq 27,069 (+0.5%), Dow 51,829 (+0.9%), WTI $92.41 (−2.3%), Brent $104.32 (−2.1%) (CNBC). The week's pattern was consistent. Stocks fell when oil and yields rose together, and bounced when talk of reopening Hormuz pulled oil down. Friday's gain rested on a diplomatic opening that Trump closed on Saturday.

The one live signal to watch: Brent, now that futures have reopened. The first read is a measured one. Brent opened near $107, then eased to about $105.86 (+1%+), WTI traded near $93.20, and S&P futures slipped just 0.2% (CNBC). The escorts help explain why. CBS reports that US-escorted convoys moved roughly 40 million barrels in 48 hours, close to prewar flows. If Brent reclaims $108, the top of last week's range, expect Friday's gains to be given back and the 10-year to test new highs. If it fades back toward $104, the market is treating the escorts, not the diplomacy, as the real supply story.

Fed: this week's data decides whether October brings a second hike in a row

On September 16 the Fed raised rates 25 bp to 3.75%–4.00% in a 12–0 vote, its first hike since 2023. The median dot shows one more hike in 2026, and Chair Kevin Warsh argued the economy is strong enough to absorb it (CNBC). August CPI ran 3.4% year over year, and gasoline accounted for more than a third of the monthly increase (CNBC). The open question is whether the Fed hikes again at its late-October meeting or waits until December.

This week's calendar (Vanderbilt Report):

Mon: Vice Chair Bowman on bank supervision; Governor Barr on the outlook and housing.
Tue: JOLTS for August, Conference Board consumer confidence; Barr and Waller speak.
Wed: August PCE and personal income, the third estimate of Q2 GDP, ADP.
Thu: ISM manufacturing, jobless claims.
Fri: the September jobs report. Consensus is about +90,000 payrolls, unemployment at 4.1% (Bloomberg).

If core PCE comes in at 0.2% or less and payrolls land near or below 90k while Brent stays below $105, October hike odds fall below a coin flip, the 10-year slips back toward 5%, and growth stocks can live with hawkish talk. If payrolls top 150k with oil above $108, the 10-year likely breaks 5.25% and valuation pressure returns for long-duration tech. The concept section below shows why.

World, briefly

Iran war. Beyond the rejected ceasefire, the US blockade has turned back 122 commercial vessels. Houthi drones and missiles targeted Riyadh and Khamis Mushait, and Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan scheduled chief-of-staff talks on joint military support. The EU warned of an emerging energy "price crisis" (CBS). UN Ambassador Mike Waltz called Iran's offer a "cynical attempt" to end the war (NBC). On Sunday Trump told Fox News the war would be won "very soon" and did not rule out more strikes. President Pezeshkian signaled openness to limits on Iran's nuclear program if the US shows it isn't seeking regime change. In the UK, police arrested several suspects near RAF Fairford under the Explosives Act (Fox News).

US–China. Beyond the tariff cut, the new AI dialogue includes a US proposal for an AI-incident alert system between the two countries, and Xi pitched AI as an area where there is "more opportunity for cooperation than competition" (CNBC).

Israel. About 1,000 Jewish visitors, including a far-right Knesset member, went up to the Temple Mount for Sukkot. Finance Minister Smotrich demanded that the attorney general reverse her order delaying the E1 settlement project, which he framed as election interference (Times of Israel).

US domestic. A shutdown is off the table because the government is funded through December 11. STAT reports that the White House cancelled nearly $1 billion in congressionally approved HHS spending, using a contested impoundment power (STAT). With the midterms five weeks out, the timing of any Iran escalation is now openly tied to the political calendar.

Elections ahead. Brazil holds the first round of its general election next Sunday, October 4, and Latvia votes on Saturday.

AI & technology

Chinese open-weight models now handle most developer traffic, and that reframes what "winning" AI means. On OpenRouter, Chinese models made up 57–67% of token usage in the week including September 14, up from 6–13% in February (CNBC). The reason is price. DeepSeek's V4 Flash costs $0.14 per million input tokens against $5.00 for GPT-5.5, a 35x gap, for models that are now "good enough" at coding and agent tasks. Two House committees are investigating (Rest of World).

The analysis: the market is splitting in two. US frontier labs still take most of the spending, because the hardest and highest-value work (like the Enigma messages that GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5 cracked this week, per TechCrunch) goes to the best models. Most of the volume, meaning routine, high-throughput agent calls, is going to whatever is cheapest. That also explains Nvidia's $12.9 billion Hugging Face deal, due to close in the first half of 2027. Nvidia does not need to own a winning model. It needs the open-model ecosystem, whatever its origin, to keep running on Nvidia hardware and tooling. Analysts told CNBC the deal is a "defensive move." Seen this way, the new US–China AI dialogue is less about diplomacy and more an acknowledgment that each side's models already run on the other side's infrastructure.

What to watch: OpenAI DevDay on Tuesday, where pricing matters more than features. A large price cut on OpenAI's mid-tier models would be the clearest sign that the Chinese pricing pressure is being felt.

Medicine & health

The FDA approved Lilly's Onswik (insulin efsitora alfa), the first once-weekly basal insulin in the US, for adults with type 2 diabetes on September 24 (Eli Lilly). Across the QWINT program of more than 3,400 adults, it lowered A1C about as much as daily basal insulin with a similar safety profile, and it replaces 365 shots a year with 52 (diaTribe).

Why it matters: the main problem with insulin in type 2 diabetes is not how well it works but whether people start it and stick with it. Many patients put off insulin for years because of the daily-injection burden, and their blood sugar stays high in the meantime. A weekly dose removes much of that barrier and fits the weekly rhythm patients already know from GLP-1 drugs like tirzepatide. The warning: it is not approved for type 1 diabetes because of a higher risk of severe hypoglycemia. With a drug that stays active for seven days, a dosing mistake cannot be undone the next day, so prescribers will need to be careful with dose titration.

Also notable: Kyverna reported that many autoimmune patients were still off other therapies a year after one CAR-T infusion. This moves one-time cell therapy for autoimmune disease closer to reality (STAT).

Concept worth learning: duration, and why 5% yields hit growth stocks hardest

Duration measures how sensitive an asset's price is to changes in interest rates. For a bond, a duration of 8 means a 1 percentage-point rise in yield cuts the price by about 8%. Stocks have a duration too. A company whose cash flows sit far in the future behaves like a long bond, and rising rates reduce what those far-off dollars are worth today.

Bond: a 10-year Treasury with modified duration ≈ 7.8. If the yield rises 50 bp (say 4.9% → 5.4%), the price falls ≈ 7.8 × 0.50% = −3.9%.

Stocks (Gordon growth model, Price = Cash flow ÷ (r − g)): both companies pay $5 of cash flow next year, and the discount rate r starts at 9%.

Growth stock (g = 5%): $5 ÷ 4% = $125. If r rises 0.5 point to 9.5%: $5 ÷ 4.5% = $111, a fall of −11%.

Slow grower (g = 1%): $5 ÷ 8% = $62.50 → $5 ÷ 8.5% = $58.82, a fall of −5.9%.

The same half-point rate shock hits the growth stock almost twice as hard, because the small gap between r and g magnifies any change in r.

Why it matters this week: this is why a strong jobs report can hurt the Nasdaq more than the Dow even if earnings don't change. It is also why companies with enormous near-term earnings are more insulated. Micron is expected to post about $31 of EPS this quarter, and near-term cash is less exposed to the discount rate than profits promised for the next decade.

This week's dashboard

September jobs report (Fri 8:30 a.m.): consensus +90k, 4.1% unemployment. This decides the October hike.
Brent crude and Hormuz headlines: about $106 in Sunday-night trading (opened near $107); $108 is the line above which the inflation story gets worse.
Micron (MU) earnings (Wed after close): guidance of about $50B revenue, about $31 EPS, about 86% gross margin (Investing.com). The FY27 guide and any comments on HBM pricing tell you whether AI capex is still speeding up. A beat followed by a sell-off is possible.
August PCE (Wed 8:30 a.m.): the Fed's preferred inflation gauge. Watch core month-over-month, not the headline, since gasoline distorts the headline.
10-year Treasury yield: 5.17% now; 5.25% on the upside, 5.00% on the downside.
Nike (NKE), Accenture (ACN), Carnival (CCL), CarMax (KMX): respectively a read on tariffs and the consumer, enterprise AI spending versus consulting headcount, how fuel costs flow through to margins, and credit for big-ticket purchases.
ISM manufacturing (Thu): after S&P Global's composite PMI hit 58.4, a hot ISM would confirm the "too strong to stop hiking" argument.

The week's main event

Friday's September jobs report. With futures at about 64% for an October hike and the 10-year near 19-year highs, this one number decides the October Fed call. Wednesday's PCE and Micron are the supporting events.

Nepal

An avalanche hit Himlung Himal base camp in central Nepal while Sherpas and kitchen staff were fixing ropes and pitching tents for a UAE expedition due on October 1. Early reports said six people were missing; later reports put the figure at 14 local workers (CNN, Explorersweb). The Met office had urged all Himalayan treks to be suspended and long-distance road travel avoided from September 25 to 27 (Kathmandu Post). Entry permits to the Annapurna and Manaslu conservation areas were suspended, and Israel's foreign ministry is trying to locate dozens of Israelis reported trapped in the mountains (Times of Israel).

Why it matters beyond the tragedy: this storm arrived one month after the August glacier-collapse flood on the Trishuli corridor, which killed more than 1,050 people and destroyed the Rasuwagadhi road to China (overview). October to November is the peak season for trekking and expeditions, a major source of foreign currency for Nepal. Two disasters back to back, plus foreign governments searching for their citizens, put that season's bookings at real risk.
